These terms apply to the CheckMates apps for iOS and Android, the website at checkmatesapp.com and the shared check pages at checkmates.cash (together, “CheckMates”, “we”, “us”). By using CheckMates you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use CheckMates.

1. The service

CheckMates reads a photo of a check, lists its items and lets you and your friends mark who had what, so each person sees their share. CheckMates is free to use. If we ever add paid features, they will be clearly marked and you will never be charged without agreeing first. We may change, pause or stop parts of the service at any time, and we don’t promise it will always be available.

2. CheckMates doesn’t handle money

CheckMates only calculates amounts. It doesn’t process, hold or transfer payments. Any payment between you and your friends happens outside CheckMates, through services you choose. Payment details you add are shown as text to everyone with the check’s link, and you decide whether to share them.

3. Check the numbers

Receipt reading is automatic and can make mistakes, and the split depends on what people pick. Treat the amounts as a helpful estimate: compare them with the receipt before anyone pays. We are not responsible for overpayments, underpayments or disagreements between friends.

4. Your content and how you use CheckMates

You are responsible for the photos, names and other content you add, and for having the right to share it. You allow us to process this content only to run CheckMates for you. Please don’t:

• upload anything illegal, or personal information about other people beyond what splitting the check needs;
• use CheckMates to harass, deceive or harm anyone;
• try to break, overload or get around the limits of the service, or access it with automated tools;
• copy, resell or reverse-engineer CheckMates, except where the law allows it.

We may block access if CheckMates is being misused.

5. Shared links

Anyone with a check’s link can view it and make picks, so share it only with the people at your table. Shared checks are deleted 7 days after they are created.

6. Ownership and app licence

The CheckMates name, apps, website and design belong to us. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the apps on devices you own or control, for non-commercial use. If you downloaded the app from Apple’s App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. Apple and Google are not responsible for CheckMates or its support.

7. Other services

CheckMates relies on services such as Cloudflare and OpenAI, and the app stores. Links to payment services or maps open services we don’t control, under their own terms.

8. No warranty

CheckMates is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows.

9. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for lost money, data or profits, arising from your use of CheckMates. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for CheckMates in the 12 months before the claim, which for the free service is zero. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.

10. Ending use

You can stop using CheckMates at any time by deleting the app. Sections 3, 8 and 9 continue to apply after you stop.

11. Changes

We may update these terms. We will change the date at the top, and if the change is significant we will also mention it on our website. Using CheckMates after an update means you accept the new terms.
